Video game popularity has skyrocketed over the last several decades, from the earliest simple games like Pong to today's sophisticated and immersive worlds. With so many games to choose from, it may be difficult to decide which one to play. As a result, many people frequently inquire about what the next best game to play is. So let’s take a look at the hottest video games of 2023 so far:
TCHIA
Developed by Awaceb and published by Kepler Interactive, Tchia is an action-adventure video game and is based in an open-world, fictional archipelago. The player assumes control of the titular protagonist, who must explore a tropical archipelago to rescue her kidnapped father. Tchia has the ability of "soul jumping", which allows her to possess and assume control of animals and inanimate objects found in the world, and uses their power to travel to new areas, solve puzzles, and defend herself against opponents. Tchia was developed by a team of 12 people in Awaceb and was released in March. It is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
WO LONG: FALLEN DYNASTY
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a historical fantasy action role-playing video game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. Players can create and customize their own player avatar, and choose from one of five "phases.” Released in March, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
METROID PRIME REMASTERED
Metroid Prime is an action-adventure game originally released back in 2002. In a Nintendo Direct presentation back in February of this year, Nintendo announced Metroid Prime Remastered, a high-definition remaster for the Nintendo Switch. The remaster was developed by Retro Studios with assistance from developers including Iron Galaxy Studios. Metroid Prime Remastered is available on Nintendo Switch.
SEASON: A LETTER TO THE FUTURE
Season: A Letter to the Future is an adventure game developed and published by Scavengers Studio. The player controls a young woman from a small village documenting the world as it comes to an end. The game was released in January 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows.
Moving forward into 2023 and 2024, here are some trends to be aware of in the gaming industry:
1. Multi-Platform Releases
Many PC and console games, as evidenced by the list of the most anticipated games above, tend to go mobile and release versions for multiple platforms at the same time. MiHoYo, for example, released Genshin Impact on PlayStation, PC, iOS, and Android, earning $3 billion on mobile alone.
2. Cloud-Based Gaming
Because the streaming comes directly from the server, cloud streaming services allow users to play games without having to download anything. Due to limited mobile device speeds, cloud gaming is not as prevalent in the mobile space as it is in other areas. However, as 5G becomes more common, more developers are likely to focus on it.
3. Blockchain Gaming
Blockchain or play-to-earn games are already available in browsers, and some are also available on mobile devices. In this type of game, players own in-game items, characters, and even land, as opposed to traditional free games, where those items must be purchased. Players are rewarded with game tokens or NFTs. Token holders can also influence the platform management system by voting on various proposals.
